Baby Boomer Humor Writing Contest

Welcome to Over 50, Still Kickin's very first writing contest! This is a writer-to-writer, Boomer-to-Boomer contest. It's meant to be fun and to give out modest prize money in the process.

There is a $5.00 entry fee and the simple rules are as follows:

Rules:

1.) Read the section farther down that says, "Entries will be judged as follows" -- especially the part about quality of writing.
2.) Theme: Humor from a Baby Boomer perspective. You do not have to be a Baby Boomer to enter, but you should understand our perspective.
3.) Your piece may be fiction or nonfiction, short short story or essay.
4.) 500 to 1,000 words
5.) Previously unpublished, except for your own blog or web site. Must be your own original work.
6.) Your entry must be squeaky clean, suitable for a general audience. If I cannot read your story to my young grandchildren without embarrassment, don't bother to send it.
7.) Must be in English.
8.) You retain all rights to your piece, other than giving us the privilege of publishing it at our web site if you are a winner.
9.) Enter up to three times, but pay the entry fee for each story or essay submitted.
10.) Pay your entry fee of $5.00. (Checkout will show that payment is being made to Full Gospel Family Publications.)

11.) Send your entry as follows (Please follow this to the letter):
  • Mail to leeann@leeannrubsam.com
  • Subject line should read "Humor Contest Entry."
  • Include your contact info (name, address, phone number, e-mail address) as the first items in your e-mail.
  • Paste your entry from your word processing program into the body of your e-mail. (Do not send attachments, as they will not be opened.)
  • Don't forget a title for your story.
  • Single space, block paragraph format (the paragraph style you will see in the articles at this web site), Times New Roman, 12 pt.
  • Include your word count after your entry. (Example: Word Count: 935)

12.) Deadline: Midnight, CDT, August 31, 2008.

Entries will be judged as follows:

1.) Quality of writing -- This includes mechanics such as spelling, punctuation, grammar, sentence construction, orderly story sequence, etc. Vivid word choices, conciseness, sticking tightly to your topic, and using nicely-turned phrases here and there will all improve your chances. (Poor writing mechanics really bother Lee Ann.)
2.) How funny is it, anyway? Your humor may range from subtle to ridiculous, but forced funny just isn't ... funny. (You do not have to write in the same style of humor as you see on this site in order to win, but it should make us laugh, or, at the very least, smile a little bit.)
3.) We have a panel of four judges, some of them fellow writers, none of them Pulitzer Prize winners, but all of them having a great sense of humor. I know it's going to bother some of you that we don't have a New York Times columnist among them, but the purpose of this contest is not to make Random House or Doubleday editors sit up and take notice of anyone's accomplishments. We expect excellence from our contestants, but unpublished or rarely published writers need not feel that being a winner is beyond their reach.

Prizes:

1st place:   $125.00
2nd place:   $75.00
3rd place:   $50.00

Winners will be notified by October 15, 2008, and will be paid via PayPal. Winning entries will be posted on this site. We will ask for your bio and web site address when notifying you that you have won, so that we can post those for you, too.

Happy writing!
